You have showered upon us blessings beond our capacity to perceive, still we aspire to grow so that we may yet receive more of your mercy. It is said that the vani of Sri Guru is more important than His vapu. It seems that we have for short moments only bathed in the glow of your perfect presence, but your instructions are ever blossoming in our hearts. It is only by your causeless mercy and affection that such service can come my way, even though I am most unqualified and fallen. You have probably heard about my being very ill, especially for the last few weeks. My body is giving me great trouble indeed because of my own bad karma and offenses. Unfortunately all my diseases are chronic. Therefore it will probably take a while before I get well. But I am not so worried about my health as I am about my service. So please, Maharaj, forgive all the unforgivable offenses that I have committed at your lotus feet, and please give me your blessing that I will be able to do some service at your lotus feet. Out of the ashes some signs of life have sprouted and fruit bearing trees are inspired to bestow fragrant blossoms and the ripened fuit among the land. Many are taking those fruits and giving water to roots of those trees nourished by the Sun. This fruit is in turn nourishing us and the sweet taste is attracting us from our burned out life among the ashes. We celebrate the auspicious dawn of a new age and pray for the opportunity to make our ashes fertiliser for the trees and thus assist the Sun in the distribution of these nectar fruits. When I saw the light in your room in Navadwip come on at 3:30 in the morning, and I knew you were up late the night before, I started to get a glimpse into the nature of uninterrupted devotional service. This happened not just one day but every day. You have no other interest except that of pleasing your Guru Maharaj, 24 hours a day. In all of your actions and words I see compassion for the conditioned souls and great care to distribute faithfully the super excellent conceptions of Srila Guru Maharaj and spread the glories of the Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. I know of Gurudev since 1983; but never had the great fortune of meeting Gurudev personally until October of 1990. Gurudev has given me hope and given it to me at a time when I desperately needed it. I once [text obscured by Fax] my life had become a state of misery; but now my life is hopeful and thus happy. Gurudev, I hope you will let this insignificant servant serve you in some small way. Neither is there any reason for a grand account of what we imagine you to be. I feel the truth relating to (yet also shielding) your Divine Grace (as an incarnated Servitor of the Predominated Deity) is of such child-like innocence and simplicity that only those free of false ego can really see and mirror your glories. That presupposes that we must be practising Divine service under your Divine Grace or your Divinely appointed guardians with our uppermost heart and soul in order to come to a real state of Divine Loves revelation, and not a shadowy mundane sentiment that gives no satisfaction to (or is harmonious with) the Centre, The Lord of all transcending Love. children are spontaneous in matters of the heart's affection, but as we get older and lose our innocence, our perception of the world is one of hard and fast laws. We know Divine love has no such laws because it has full freedom of Divine expression. We are so conditioned by what we think we see as real, that it is impossible for us to know the substance within the form, without the revelation of one who knows the Truth. Therefore as Krishna revealed Himself to Arjuna, so likewise once can only see the Guru by His Grace. When we feel the barrenness in our hearts our despair is—will we ever have the deposit to start a spiritual life free from mundane interest? Are we supposed to search for feelings not yet awarded or positions not yet given, or can we understand the simple truth your Mercy is all we are made of. Therefore please be merciful and allow the servants of your London Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math to have dedication to your Divine Grace without any question of holidays, sick pay, wage disputes, pension arrangements, etc . . . In 1982 I was fortunate to move into the San Jose Ashram under the guidance of Srila Bhakti Sudhir Goswami Maharaj. One of thefirst services he ever gave me was to transcribe tapes of Srila Sridhar Maharaj. Actually, my service wasn't transcribing, but proofreading for spelling, etc. When I heard the following words spoken by Srila Sridhar Maharaj I realised that at last I had found what my heart had always been searching for: I had found someone who knew the Lord. I had found someone who could tell me how to find Him. Those words were along these lines: that one's days in the material world would be numbered if we could see that we have nobody to blame for our predicament of being here other than ourselves. I think he used the phrase "a bad workman quarrels with his tools", (or stools). The realisation that the dirt was in my own eyes, that I actually had full responsibilty foar my situation was extremely eye-opening, and a relief. Not that it would be easy to clear the dirt from my own eyes, but knowing that that was what I had to do, and athat I had acome to a bona fide representative of the Lord who could show me the way, that was one very joyful day I will always cherish. Gurudev, you give us the means to begin clearing away all our cloudy vision. You give us the means by which we can see what is what. Gurudev, you tell it like it is. Gurudev, you really see, with crystal clear vision. You have your eyes at all times on the spiritual realm. Due to your endless compassion towards the wandering souls of this material plane who cannot see, who cannot begin to perceive of the spiritual realm, you amke yourself available to us. In this material world, seeing is believing. But to be there, in that higher plane, one will see is one will believe. We develop faith through service. We believe the Vaishnavas and we begin to perceive that higher plane. We begin to sense that what our heart desires is very real there, in that place. it is to be found in Reality the Beautiful, through Sri Guru and His Grace. That which we are hoping for most of all, love and beauty, does indeed exist. You've given us such joy and hope for a bright tomorrow. I pray to somehow remain in the shadow of your servants, for in their shadow I may experience a glimpse of that cool Reality, away from the harshness of the material existence which burns my soul again and again.
